These "mutant" cacti reflect nature’s captivating unpredictability. Crested cacti's peculiar, fan-shaped, often undulating forms are the results of primary plant growth gone awry. Cristate forms, or crests, occur when the cells of the primary growing point begin to multiply along a line, elongating the growing point to form "fans.” These fascinating, unusual oddballs, resembling snakes, brains, and more, are prized by cactus lovers and are superb "what the heck is that?"-style conversation starters. Cristate (crested) plants require less light than the normal forms. Crested cacti usually do not flower as often as their typical growth counterparts, but it’s really all about those wild forms.
